So, 6w5.

But since then, I feel I have changed, maybe have even moved into another place. Sometimes, I feel like I am more like a 9... maybe a 9w1 or 8... or flipping between the two.

My question is: Has anyone else experienced a significant shift in type as they got older? Is it even possible -- I didn't think it was, but now I am not so sure.

I haven't taken an inventory test because I could make myself look like a 6 (or a 9) if I wanted to because I know too much about the types...

I realize it is an exercise in futility because we'll never really know. But, it's fun! Then I start to think about how deep and real you could make fictional characters if you utilized the Enneagram during the character development process. I wonder if successful screenwriters or novelists do this.

So, today I'm cruising around the web and I find this website that types Star Trek characters:
I'm not a big Trekkie but I've seen enough to appreciate what the author of this website has done. It is very interesting. I figured I'd pass it on and see what others think of typing fictional characters. Have you done it? What do you think about Tony Soprano?

It is said amongst all the teachers I've studied that we are born with our point already fixed, that it is pre-determined, and that it does not change throughout life. Once a 7 always a 7 type of thing...

I've also heard some really fascinating theories about how this might happen though - how that is determined in the womb. It's similar to how our sex is determined in a way. We know some babies are born girls and others boys, but we don't stop there - we've long since researched into the phenomenon and found out about X and Y chromosomes and all this, and thus we understand how boys are born boys and girls girls. So what about our personalities?

Also, it begs the question that there is a biological basis or need involved. If our personalities are an act of our biology - i.e. it's Nature and not nurture - then why is that? Biology doesn't seem to do hardly anything extraneously, in fact if you look through the eons Life is amazingly efficient and adaptive to its exact environment and limitations. So how does the personality of the human fit into all this?

Have any ideas? Thoughts?

How does it stand up for you?

Type 1 The Reformer
Excessive use of diets, vitamins, and cleansing techniques (fasts, diet pills, enemas). Under-eating for self-control: in extreme cases anorexia and bulimia. Alcohol to relieve tension.

Type 2 The Helper
Abusing food and over-the-counter medications. Bingeing, especially on sweets and carbohydrates. Over-eating from feeling "love-starved." Hypochondria to look for sympathy.

Type 3 The Achiever
Over-stressing the body for recognition. Working out to exhaustion. Starvation diets. Workaholism. Excessive intake of coffee, stimulants, amphetamines, cocaine, steroids or excessive surgery for cosmetic improvement.

Type 4 The Individualist
Over-indulgence in rich foods, sweets, alcohol to alter mood, to socialize, and for emotional consolation. Lack of physical activity. Bulimia. Depressants. Tobacco, prescription drugs, or heroin for social anxiety. Cosmetic surgery to erase rejected features.

Type 5 The Investigator
Poor eating and sleeping habits due to minimizing needs. Neglecting hygiene and nutrition. Lack of physical activity. Psychotropic drugs for mental stimulation and escape, narcotics for anxiety.

Type 6 The Loyalist
Rigidity in diet causes nutritional imbalances ("I don't like vegetables.") Working excessively. Caffeine and amphetamines for stamina, but also alcohol and depressants to deaden anxiety. Higher susceptibility to alcoholism than many types.

Type 7 The Enthusiast
The type most prone to addictions: stimulants (caffeine, cocaine, and amphetamines), Ecstasy, psychotropics, narcotics, and alcohol but tend to avoid other depressants. Wear body out with effort to stay "up." Excessive cosmetic surgery, pain killers.

Type 8 The Challenger
Ignore physical needs and problems: avoid medical visits and check-ups. Indulging in rich foods, alcohol, tobacco while pushing self too hard leads to high stress, strokes, and heart conditions. Control issues central, although alcoholism and narcotic addictions are possible.

Type 9 The Peacemaker
Over-eating or under-eating due to lack of self-awareness and repressed anger. Lack of physical activity. Depressants and psychotropics, alcohol, marijuana, narcotics to deaden loneliness and anxiety.

My partner and three of my closest friends just all happen to be 6's. In fact, I seem to know a damn lot of 6's. I've often wondered if there isn't a greater number of them than other points - or maybe its a greater number of the inner triad (3's, 6's & 9's)? Perhaps, I've thought, the enneagram is actually even more of a tri-fold symmetry then we might think, and there are relatively higher percentages of certain points present in our society at all times, the same way that our biology regulates the births of males to females...

switching tracks a little... is it just me or do 6's have a tendency to be the most committed non-committals? grrrr.... With some things I feel I can bet my life on them and with other things i feel they just cannot be pinned down - its never in between. Maybe because making a commitment is such a major thing to a 6? There's just such a deliberateness involved. It's been very interesting to me to have been studying the enneagram and ego psychology for a number of years now and to also so intimately know so many 6's. This particular personality type has truly jumped off the pages of all the books for me and come alive as a much more dynamic, more intricate and complex configuration of Being that any of the other points. Sometimes I've noticed similarities about my friends that I haven't read about yet and I'll ask them what their experience with it is...

Also fascinating is the phenomenon of 6's tending to be one of the most psychic points on the enneagram. I have experienced this a lot! I'm curious what others' experience with this is. My partner is a great example. He's the first person I ever knew who not only can hear my thoughts quite often, he can also put his own thoughts in my head and I think they're mine at first. Its like his psychic aura is so powerful that when I'm around it I'm just swimming in it...

Anyway... enough of that... just had some thoughts and wanted to start a thread!

I am putting together a brief transitions group for the high school seniors at my school getting ready to graduate. I thought they might have fun doing the Enneagram, Meyers Briggs, and Josef tests for self-discovery. I realized that I had never actually taken the enneagram and just assumed I was a 4 but when I took both forms of the enneagram test a bit ago at my sibling's request, turns out I am not a 4 at all but actually a 9. Its interesting to me how our self-perception can vary ... So, here is my question/favor. If you have never taken the enneagram, or if you took it a long time ago, can you take a guess which type below you think you are now and then actually take the test here at http://www.eclecticenergies.com/enneagram/test.php and then let me know if it turns out you are right or wrong? You can shoot me an email. I am just curious if this is a common pattern with people and if it is, I have a neat idea for my group. Or if you have tested as one type earlier but switched types over the years, either on the enneagram or the Meyers Briggs, I'd like to know. Thank you!!! (If you don't want to post your result for any reason, feel free to send me an email. I'd really appreciate it!)

She came in after and I said you should just go to bed now, I'm not coming up. She looked at me and said "I know what you're trying to do? You're trying to make me feel bad and I'm not going to do it." Then she went up to bed on her own and that was that. I felt terrible that we went to be annoyed with each other but I don't know how to deal with the 8 personality. It's quite daunting.

For 34 years I tried to stay clear of any controversy about the ‘Western transmission” though I have followed closely the work of some people who have followed Claudio Naranjo and Oscar Ichazo. I read tribe.net also and sometimes make comments. Recently, however, as I examine what has been said about Naranjo’s work in early 70’s, I think that it might be useful to revisit those heady days in Berkeley.

I started to blog about it, but soon discovered that the format was not the right vehicle. So I set to work on three articles. The first (which does appear on my blog) tries to describe how Claudio actually worked with his first students; the second examines the muddied stories about esoteric roots of the system; and the third, which is not yet published, concerns the “Jesuit transmission.”

I was wondering if anyone has heard of the Print assessment and has taken it. It's an assessment used by life coaches and possibly other groups. I don't really know the origins of it or how it was developed.

It's a system based on the Enneagram numbers. Everyone has a Major Print and Minor Print. These numbers reveal your unconscious motivators. They determine your "Best Self" when successfully using the behavior that you "like to" and "Shadow" when using the negative side of the behaviors when you "must have" something.

That's about all I've been able to find out. Internet research hasn't really turned up anything. l can't see any real benefits to Print compared to the Enneagram, other than potentially seeing yourself in another number.

I just took it a few weeks ago and tested similar but not exactly to my Enneagram type. In the Enneagram, I'm a 4w5 (very strong 5 wing). In Print, my Major is a 5 (makes sense), and my Minor is a 9. Lately I've been very focused on avoiding conflict with others and making sure all are content in new relationship dynamics. So, even though there are parts of a 9 I relate to, I am definitely an Enneagram type 4.

Just wondering if anyone else has taken Print and if so, how that compares to your Enneagram type.

For instance, I'm in the midst of a landscaping project. My mom desperately wants to help me with it. She wants to do the design and the planting (she is qualified). She is offering my step-dad to do the irrigation (again qualified). But I want to hire a landscaper to do some of it for a variety of reasons. The reason at the top of the list is that they live 5 hours away and I just want to get it done asap not piecemeal over a couple of months.

My mom's reaction is to criticize every bid I get. Ok, so I probably don't need to include her in the bids. I get that now. I didn't realize she would react this way. But, in the long term, or the next time, I'd like to be able to seek her advice but not engage her services (so to speak). How????

The other reason is that my mom has a tendency to take over these types of projects and not listen to what *I* want (been happening my whole life). She forces her opinions on me and ultimately, because she is helping me out of the "goodness of her heart," her opinons win b/c I start to feel guilty and she gets what she wants and I'm left wondering what the hell just happened.

If I reject her help, it is as if I've personally attacked her.

Anyone out there have advice for me on how best to deal with this?

Well, I'm a 3 and I'm proud of it. I'm working hard these days on becoming more self-accepting and more authentic (to the tune of about $10,000 worth of therapy). Oh yea and I'm trying to be more modest. Well, I'm kind of working on that. To be truthful (and authentic) sometimes I like to exploit my immodest side. It blows people away and I kind of like that feeling.
OUR HISTORY
ATP was originally founded to investigate and promote ultimate states -- also described as peak experiences, being-states, or mystical states of consciousness -- and how these experiences could be encouraged and enhanced for changing both personal and cultural perspectives. Evidence of ATP's success over the past 30 years includes: the wide-spread acceptance of the use of meditation in health care; an increased dialog between science and spiritual traditions; scientific recognition of the importance of religious beliefs in maintaining personal health; and an increasing recognition of the importance of spiritual values in conducting sustainable commerce.
the deeper connection with nature that we have fleeting moments with (or, for those who are luckier, longer moments with) where we feel connected with the higher Self, takes us back to when we were very young children when we were unable to differentiate between 'me' and 'not me'. That place of freedom where the ego hadn't started to build buffers was a place which shared everything and everybody around it as if it were 'me'.
This struck such a chord with me because it seemed to explain how we are able to have these moments of deep connection with people/nature.
However!! When we were this young was this behaviour not completely egocentric??? We were unable to disassociate ourselves from everything else in the world therefore we assumed that everything = 'me'. Is this not total egocentrism?

i was first introduced to the enneagram twenty years ago through an ARICA student who became the co-founder of the spiritual school at our meditation center. it was our primary tool of self-observation and exploration. my lineage is with the Ichazo/Narranjo/DiamondHeart schools.

this is a truly mysterious and phenomenal evolution of natural laws being discovered within the blue print of humanity.

i look forward to knowing you all and your ideas.
may we all be unified in our circle system.

The goal is to type them as 3 possible numbers (either through extensive questioning or through general observation over time), and I assure you those 3 distinct types will be connected (through integration/disintegration), so for instance, a 1 will act as an unhealthy 4 at times, and as a healthy 7 at others, and since 1 is the only number connected to both those numbers, you have nailed that person's type. The 3.6.9 triad can prove more difficult, but the premise of healthy(integration) and unhealthy(disintegration) makes it fairly easy to discern the difference.

This article is amazing, it has proven to me that I have been right about my Gnostic notions. This quote particularly:

The Pistis Sophia combines the ideas of reincarnation and divine union in a verse beginning with the question:

"[What happens to] a man who has committed no sin, but done good persistently, but has not found the mysteries?" (Pistis Sophia)

The Pistis Sophia reveals such a soul will receive "a cup filled with thoughts and wisdom," allowing the soul to remember its divine origin and pursue the "mysteries of the light" until it finds them and is able to "inherit the light forever." To "inherit the light forever" is a Gnostic term for union with God.

I interpret my "cup filled with thoughts and wisdom" to be the Enneagram, which has proven to be the key to my spiritual salvation, and the catalyst for my return to the divine. Here's the article:

www.near-death.com/experien...cayce03.html

Remeber, Plato says that some of us are meant to be Guardians, and, being finally freed from our egoic cave, having seen the sun, having lived upon the true earth, we must descend back into the depths of our former bondage and reach out to others...Simply put, it is our destiny.

And the underlying question, I suppose, is determining when a tendency crosses the line from personality trait to pathology. As a 4w5 who was once diagnosed with BPD (at the same time that I was also diagnosed with major depression AND bipolar NOS, so I'm not sure how accurate *any* of those diagnoses were), I noted with particular interest the apparent similarities between the description of the Four and the DSM-IV criteria for diagnosing BPD:

A pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and affects, and marked impulsivity beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

(1) frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment.

(2) a pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by alternating between extremes of idealization and devaluation

(3) identity disturbance: markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self

(4) impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., spending, sex, Substance Abuse, reckless driving, binge eating).

(5) recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior

(6) affective instability due to a marked reactivity of mood (e.g., intense episodic dysphoria, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days)

(7) chronic feelings of emptiness

(8) inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights)

(9) transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms

(see http://www.behavenet.com/capsules/disorders/borderlinepd.htm)

Oh, I'm also a psych major, so I may be looking for connections where none exists. Now if I could only find a way to use all of this knowledge to find and maintain a fulfilling relationship...

Anybody here familiar with Eli Jaxon-Bear, and his approach to the enneagram? Any comments?

I took an enneagram workshop last week, which was largely based on Jaxon-Bear's work... the focus on "personality type" and psychology was *extremely* low, while there was a *lot* of emphasis on healing old wounds, and the more human/spiritual side of using the enneagram. Very different, but definitely worthwhile....

Another way of using the types

Over time, an alternate way of using the types has evolved for me.

I give 1 number each for embodiment, emotion and mind.
Then, I take 1 of those 3 as the primary number for the person overall, but all 3 factor in.

So, a person has 3 numbers which describe them, with one being their primary seat as a person.

So, I'm a 2 (emotion), 1 (body) and 5 (mind), with 2 I'd say as my primary

The emotion number is either 2, 3 or 4; the mind number is either 5, 6 or 7; and the embodiment number is either 8, 9 or 1.

Here's a brief overview

For Body, there are 3 styles of embodiment

8 - This sense of body is total, definite, massive, inclusive, just 'there'. There's a feeling of strength, power, solid earthy presence, placement, kind of blunt. This is like the big beefy person who sits there like Sitting Bull, or maybe moves with a feeling that all of them is moving. As personalities these people are like bosses, or captains, linebackers, etc. Old style gurus were often 8's. When you look at an enlightened version of this type of person, it's as if there sense of body includes the entire environment, as one big all-ness. This is the totality or external body-sense

9 - This one is like the open, empty body, or the body as space, that can take any shape. Body here means the ability to embody, the flexibility which allows any body, any embodiment to happen. Movability, not having to take a position, so being very relaxed, kind of free, the sense of presence is more like space. As personalities these people are often harmonizers, bridgers, understanders, connectors. Modern gurus are often 9's. This is the relational body-sense, that is in-between, between any 2 shapes, as one moves and changes into another.

1 - This is like the channeller, they find the center line of the body, associated with the crown and the root chakras. They like to be clearly rooted and in tune. As a person, they are drawn to truth, rightness, or alignment, clarity, precision, etc. All those have to do with that center line feeling, alignment, that allows the energy to flow cleanly up and down the channel. They notice when things are 'off'. This is the internal body-sense.

For Emotion, there are 3 styles

2 - This is the emotional texture of relationship, the emotional space that exists between self and other. So it's centered around the feeling of in-between-ness, what's going on between self and some other. A # 2 person is always aware of the energy between themselves and the other person, they may alter themselves or the positioning of themselves to manage the relational energy. They are often friends, healers, family people, nurturers. They seek to optimize the emotional space of relationship, they love it when the relational energy feels really good, when it flows really well, like a dance. This is the relational emotion-sense

3 - This is the emotion around an adventure, a project, a calling, a venture, a plan, a movement. It is outward moving. It's passionate, often strident, about working hard, winning, succeeding, that sense of big emotion that happens when you really invest in something and give yourself to it. 3's like to be connected to something, motivated, committed, working on it, passionate, into it. It is the big, outward going emotion movement. This is the outward emotion-sense.

4 - This is the interior emotion within the person, at the core of their being. This feels like going deep inside a special, mystical/inspirational/unique place within the heart. It's the emotion that artists and such people relate to. It's kind of special and could be precocious. It's not really about other people or the outside world at all, but it likes to be seen and known, and especially honored as sacred. 4's are often dreamy, romantic, idealistic; and could be hard to understand or please, elusive like that space they seek inside. There is a sweet, unique, magical, transcendent space they offer, like your mystical lover, if you can approach them right. This is the internal emotion-sense.

For Mind, 3 styles

5 - This is the big mind, which likes to take it all in, see all the connections, just 'grok' the whole thing. It likes to understand or know the whole universe, so to do that it must step back, and somewhat outside of it all, in order to see it all. It likes the big idea, the grand theme, the big concept which encompasses all the interconnects. 5's have been called philosophers, they are wise yet sometimes a bit apart. This is the outward mind-sense.

6 - This is the mind of insight, penetrating to the root, often hidden. It sees the singular, central key to the puzzle, through the veils. It likes to see through the hiding, find the secret truth at the heart of the matter. It goes for the simple, not the complex. It likes to know what really makes someone tick, and assesses relationships based on the other person's deep loyalty, the root of the relationship. This is the internal mind-sense.

7 - This is the particular, comparative mind, it tastes each thing, and compares to the others, organizes, arranges and plays in the playground of it all. It loves to sample a bit of everything, and to understand it all by appreciating each unique thing in relation to each of the others. 7's have been called gourmands, connousieurs. This is the relational mind-sense.

So, for each area of our human-beingness (body, emotion, mind) we find our own root style of relating to that sphere of experience.
Then we take one of those 3 as the main place we hang out

If you multiply the possibilities out with this way of doing it, there are 27 combinations
However, it becomes 81 if you consider that a 2-5-8 person (2/emotion is primary) is different than a 5-2-8 (5/mind is primary)

If you want to get elaborate, you can still use the wing concept, the wing becomes a fine-grained way of talking about exactly how your own version of one of the numbers works.

Curious to hear what anybody has to say about this!

The ancient spiritual system of the enneagram describes nine ego types that arise as a result of loss of contact with our true nature. It also depicts how reality looks beyond the egoic self, giving us useful guidance in opening to a more fundamental dimension of ourselves. In this daylong retreat, we will explore how working with the enneagram can clarify our understanding of self and not self, cut through our obscurations, and deepen our practice. The material will be taught through lectures and experiential exercises so that participants can personally connect with the wisdom of the enneagram.

***STANDARD ISSUE BIO TO FOLLOW***

I'm a Type 4 on the Enneagram, with a strong 5 Wing and a Line to Type 1. I am a wife, a witch, a writer, an artist, a spirtual person, a faithful friend, and much more.

I am 5'2 1/2" and curveous. I have a cute little nose and deep mysterious dark brown eyes. I have red hair(normally, right now it has plum tones.... I was bored) that is just below shoulder length. I have often been told I give off a maternal vibe. It must be the Earth in me. I am a Capricorn with a Sagitarius rising and a Libra Moon.

I am 29 years old. I live in Portland, Oregon US and I absolutely adore it here. I mainly grew up in Pennsylvania and I don't miss it much. I moved here a few years back with my then boyfriend (now hubby) and now we wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

I am working on writing the mythos and descriptions for a new sci-fi board game for my current writing project. www.you-n-it.com I am also writing a science fiction novel. I am a big time geek and quite proud of it. I collect action figures and comic books. We won't even get into my gaming shelf... lol. So this is the ideal job for me.

I have been deeply devoted to my spiritual path lately. It has changed my perspective on a lot of things. I feel very fulfilled spiritually. It is nice to find the path that is right for you. It is like everything else clicks.

I am a unique person and I appreciate the unique and odd in the world. I can ramble on about something of substance or talk about the importance of understanding the Hokey Pokey IS what it is all about. I am a good listener, and I hold secrets well. I suppose this is why strangers spill their guts to me. Human nature interests me a great deal. I love trying to guess what makes people tick. I suppose that is one of the reasons I like the Enneagram. Well that and the whole *phew* there are other weirdos out there thing. lol.

Of course, being a writer, I am an avid reader.
Some of My Favorite Books :

* The Stranger by Albert Camus
* The Factotum by Charles Bukowski
* Black House by Stephen King and Peter Straub

I totally dig movies, especially the bizarre ones that not many people know about.
* True Romance
* Dirty Pretty Things

I am terrible addicted to SmallVille. I even made a Smallville quiz that was based on their Enneagram types ( http://quizilla.com/users/RowanAshe/quizzes/What%20Smallville%20character%20are%20you%20most%20like%3F/ )

My musical tastes are varied. I could be listening to Vivaldi or Nick Cave depending on my mood. I like Gothic music and independent bands a lot.

I'm wondering if anyone here has done a tarot spread as an enneagram and if so how would they interpret the spread -- ie. what meanings do they derive from each card position, the triad, and the hexad, etc.

I can see mapping the card positions to the nine Hudson/Riso types but what meaning would you derive from the triad and the hexad??

If anyone has any pointers for developing these that would be most helpful.

thanks,

I've just been through a life crisis, and I'm currently grieving and sorting through the resulting insights and implications. As a result, I won't be online nearly as much as I used to be; I need to re-balance my life, and pay attention to the parts of my life that I have neglected. This Enneagram Two has (once again) been tripped up by issues of pride and entitlement, and is currentlyh learning a (very painful but necessary) lesson in humility.

I am just getting so sick and tired of all these useless and annoying social networking software services: Friendster, Orkut, Multiply, MySpace, etc. So don't expect to see me on them very much anymore (although I may still drop into the Gay Bloggers Tribe on tribe.net, which I still think is one of the better services).

You can still reach me via one of the only two internet services which I think are good enough to pay for: flickr.com (photos) and last.fm (music). My user name on both services is Quiplash; feel free to look me up, see my photos and hear my music, and say hello.

Several people had recommended it to me as a book well-worth reading, but somehow, maybe because it's related from such a different perspective compared to my favourite Riso/Hudson books, that's it's been a tough slog sometimes. I got as far as page 37 and haven't touched it now for at least six months.

I culled this from "The Enneagram" by JG Bennet:

If you were to divide the number 1 (symbolic of The Unity) by each of the ordinal numbers 1 through 9, you'd find that only four of them are infinitely repeating decimals:

1 divided by 3 = .3333...etc.
1 divided by 6 = .16666...etc.
1 divided by 9 = .11111...etc
1 divided by 7 = .142857142857142857...etc.

(The other numbers are finite like 1 divided by 8 = .125)

The authors of the Enneagram thought the infinity factor of these particular numbers to be 'interesting'. So they plotted out a circle with 9 points. They first connected points 3, 6, and 9. (Creating the triangle.) Then they connected points 1, 4, 2, 8, 5, 7 (from 1 divided by 7, also representing the leftover numbers after 3, 6 and 9 are accounted for) and got the dynamic inner lines.

If you go ahead and plot out the numbers 1 - 9 on an Enneagram with 9 at the topmost point, you'll see clearly how they did it.

Smart fellas, that bunch were, eh?
