Sandra Maitri, author of The Spiritual Dimensions of the Enneagram did a daylong workshop at Spirit Rock in Marin on the 12th.
I liked it very much. There was a basic overview of the types, accompanied by two small group excercises, and then she detailed the edges of spirtual growth helpful to know, (the Holy Ideals and Virtues) in order to break through the conditioning of each type.
A few quotes I liked from her:
"One of our biggest challenges to unfoldment is when we start feeling better."
"The content is not the issue, it is your relation to it that counts."
"Open to suffering to end it."
"Simply facing what we are afraid of deepens our capacity."
Reflections? anyone else attend too?

Re: Sandra Maitri workshop re-cap
Tue, March 1, 2005 - 7:24 PMIt’s been couple weeks but here’s some more stuff I liked from my notes: (memory may spill out some stuff as I go).
The part that makes it spiritual is that the enneagram can help one move beyond the ego structure, not just describe it.
Avoid fixating on your type. It’s just a map...a description of a pattern.
We perpetuate darkness by not paying attention to ourselves.
Find the relevance of each Enneagram number in your own experience. Enneagram is right there as you’re speaking....ie: are you losing touch with words, trying to impress, feeling doubtful...?
Type conditioning and corrolary action breaking the conditioning : (briefest summaries)
•Out of touch triad
9 indolence, action/movement
1 criticism, serenity/relax
8 prejudice, innocence/beginners mind
•Fear triad
6 insecurity, faith/courage
7 addiction, sobriety/settling
5 attatchment, letting go/allowing flow
• (self) Image triad
3 deception, truth/veracity
2 pride, humility/recognize limitations of own self, care
4 emotional drowning, equanimity/opening to positive
Sandra suggested how to inquire into personal obstacles:
Ask questions, how come? what’s behind this? Why don’t I do what feels right to do- come up with your own answer. ie: for a #6 might go like “What’s scary about letting feelings come up? being impulsive ? acting on them?
Feel into your own tendencies- how you are drawn towards your passions, feel and sense the pull and question it. Am I protecting myself? . . .

Re: Sandra Maitri workshop re-cap
Mon, April 25, 2005 - 4:42 PMTwo of the quotes:
"Open to suffering to end it."
"Simply facing what we are afraid of deepens our capacity."
Have a lot of meaning to me. I had a friend (Who was integral in freeing me from a deep depression that almost took my life) who simply stated one day:
"Find Hope In The Truths You Fear To Face"
And it has changed my life. I later came up with the analogy:
"Dealing with pain is like looking at a deep, cold, pool of water. The water is your pain, and you know that jumping in is going to disorient, discomfort, even hurt you if its cold enough, but you also need to realize that you will eventually adjust to the temperature, to the climate, to the feeling of the water around you, and soon what was once feared, what was once percieved as indefinitely painful, was just a moment waiting to be broken through. Life flashes before your eyes as you plunge into the depths of your soul, but as you gasp for air and flail about, you soon realize you are bouyant, and suddenly you are floating, free and comfortable."
