can anyone help me? I've never been able to figure out if I'm a number 1 or a number 4. When I take the tests they come out even. I know the types are related some way...but how?

Re: 1 or 4? can't figure it out...?
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 11:46 AMInstead of looking specifically at the characteristics of the type, try looking at the *weaknesses* of the type, and see which ones seem to fit you better.
I never felt more like my type until I started reading about what happens when a 9 feels pressured, or is under stress, at which point it was as if someone was reading my mail. -

Re: 1 or 4? can't figure it out...?
Mon, November 20, 2006 - 5:44 PMI agree. For a couple years I couldn't decide if I was a 4 with a strong 5 wing, or a 5 with a strong 4 wing. At a period in my life when I was under extreme stress, I realized I reacted just like a 4. That really helped to solidify my decision.
A connection between a 1 and 4 is in the lines of development. When a 4 is healthy and striving towards personal development, he/she takes on some of the positive traits of a 1. Perhaps this is you?

Re: 1 or 4? can't figure it out...?
Wed, November 29, 2006 - 3:46 PMI always felt more a 4 than a 1, but felt I had alot of 1 characteristics. A friend who is much more infomed on enneagrams said I was definitely a 1. They say that a one manifests as a 4 when under stress (I think that is the direction).
So just think that in some areas I am a 4 and others a 1. I never fit into neat categories anyway.

Re: 1 or 4? can't figure it out...?
Sun, December 3, 2006 - 11:55 AMForget the tests. What do you feel? What have you observed about your inner motivations? How much time do you spend evaluating, judging and what amount of time do you spend feeling morose and left out and self ansorbed? Those may be generalizations, but hopefully they might point you to some rich inner discoveries.

Re: 1 or 4? can't figure it out...?
Sun, December 24, 2006 - 5:12 PMDo you have never ending self-critical chatter in your head? Y-more 1, 4 seem to be more outwardly emotional and dramatic, they do have perfectionistic qualities but in the 1 they are more outwardly visible. 1's are very neat & organized, 4 experience more envy and jealousy wanting to be like others, 1 tend to think everyone should be like/think the way they do and everything would be fine. And don't laugh.....but what's your hair like? One's tend to have neat, well grooomed hair usually short or a bob. Look at the wings, and the disintegration points for each and see what feels right.
The only decent test is the long one by Riso/Hudson 144 questions, you have to buy the book.
Sandra Maitri's Enneagram book , The Spiritual Diminsion of the Enneagram I feel is the best....it has very good description of the 4. and like everyone else said when you read the types, the one that causes you to have a physical/emotional reaction...Bingo -

Re: 1 or 4? can't figure it out...?
Wed, August 8, 2007 - 10:46 AMAsk your friends. They can perhaps see you more objectively than you can. If they don't know the Enneagram, read the book with them. It will be a fun way to bond and get to know each other better.
My ex-boyfriend though for years that he was a 1, and I thought so, too. But when he took the Hudson/Riso test, it said he was a 4, a type he had never read much about. When he read the description, it clicked and now we both understand why he was so self-absorbed and temperamental all the time. We've both grown over the years and the Enneagram was a big help to us. I'm a 9/8 wing, btw. He was the emotional hurricane and I was the still-to-a-fault center.
