What are you? I *think* I'm a 2 w/ 1 wing, married to a 6. Don't know his wing - I don't have my books anymore and it's been years since I've studied...

I've never met a 5 who would talk about personality types...yay! What wing do you have? Or do you think everyone one has a little of both?

There is a barriere because Enneagram does not have an intelectual appealing - but it is an all encompassing system and that is very attractive for 5s. The Palmer book talks about that.

I'm a 2...more specifically, a Social 2 with a 3 Wing. In other words, in three rolls of the dice, it came up "extrovert" all three times: Social, Two, Three :-) I can work a room like nobody's business...

Hello...I am new to this tribe but have been studying the enneagram for about 3 years now and attended a lecture by Riso and Hudson....after that I learned to work with the healthy aspect of my traits....being a pure, unadulterated 4 that has been difficult !
      • Re: Practice, build,expand

Fours often get such a bad rap in some authors' books...but I have found that Riso and Hudson have worked hard to give an even-handed exposition of all the traits and characteristiscs (good and bad) of each type.

Course it helps when one of the authors (Hudson I think) is also a 4 :-)

Don is a 4/3, Rusty a 5/4. Don is probably an SX, Rusty an SO.

I'm a 4/5, or Four with a 5-wing, weighted about 65/35. I'm also a Blake clan "Energy is Eternal Delight" Four, one of the less common clans. And I'm a black-Four rather than a purple-Four.

Don's great gift was to present the upside of each type as well as the downside. A friend of mine (www.heartmind.org) is a Riso certified teacher, and we used to give classes in Menlo Park, California years ago.

Male 2w3s are quite rare; I've only met three or four in my life (that I can remember, anyway). About as rare as 8/9 women. But consider Janet Reno and Tommy Tune...there you are.

Hello.. I'm new to this tribe... I've been studying the enneagram for 4 years now... and always looking to learn more about how we function in and outside of our types... I'm a 4... but sometimes I think I may be a 2... Do any of you have a preference to either Palmer or Risso-Hudson books? or any one else for that matter.... Have a good one.... :)
    • Re: Type yourself

      Thu, November 6, 2003 - 6:12 PM
I find Riso and Hudson more even-handed about the strengths and weaknesses of each type. Palmer seems to pathologize everything, which I don't find as helpful, at least not for someone starting out.

        Sat, November 8, 2003 - 12:56 PM
I would agree. I personally am not a big fan of Palmer's writings. The Riso and Hudson book "Wisdon of the Enneagram" gave me loads of insights about myself, and I found working through it very enlightening.
        • Re: Type yourself

          Sat, November 8, 2003 - 2:51 PM
Palmer's books are or seem to be more scientific and less practical application.... Risso-Hudson is more "user friendly" :) and Yes that book Wisdom of is a great book.... I also have a little fun book I give to people as an introduction called the enneagram made easy by Baron and Wagele... its nothing more than a quick read to spark an interest but its a fun little read.... Hope youre all having a great day.....

Yes, Baron and Wagele's books are fun introductions. My favourite is "Are You My Type, Am I Yours?" (or is it "Am I Your Type, Are You Mine?" damn difficult tilte to remember correctly :-) anyways, I agree, they're the perfect introductions for people new to the Enneagram.

Based on the readings and a few tests, I appear to be a 9 with a 1 wing, one-on-one type.

I need to check some more sites and some more resources and figure out what to do with this information...

      >Based on the readings and a few tests, I appear to be a 9 with a 1 wing, one-on-one type.

Interesting. I'm definitely definitely a 9 (with other notable components also, but definitely 9 at the core), but I've never been able to nail down the wing satisfactorily. Say more about the one-on-one thing.
      • Re: Type yourself

        Sun, November 23, 2003 - 6:02 PM
Riso/Hudson and other authors talk about the instinctual variant and how it affects your type. The three insitnctual variants are:

Social: focus is on relating to groups of people, or society as a whole

Sexual (or one-to-one): focus is on a one-to-one realtionship, or significant other

Self-Preservation: focus is on self and one's own needs

There is something called a stacking where one instinctual variant is dominant, one is in the middle, and one is at the bottom. The dominant instinctual variant is the "arena" where many of your Type's issues get played out; for example, I am a Social Two, but under stress I become ANTI-social and withdraw.

        Hope this helps,
        --Ryan.

I did not read the Riso/Hudson book - but I found the dynamics presented in Hurley/Dobson very convincing. It says all 2s in stress become 8s and in safe situation 4s.
I observed my own behaviour and it fits very well. 5s in stress become 7s and in comfort 8s.
Whats more, the dynamics shows the path of self developement as well - the good direction is towards the safe point.

I'm a 9w1-- which I settled on after about a year of also considering 2, 5 and 6 as possibles. I used to think I was a self-pres Nine, but the more I look at it, the more I think I'm a sexual Nine.

I'm an INFJ, according to the MBTI.

I thought I was a 4w? but after going to the above mentioned site I was typed a 7w?. Although instinct (which I heavily believe is the true way to type) tells me I'm a four, I have always idealized 7's and looked for relationships with them. I orginally typed myself a 4 before beginning medications for psycho-therapy. Could what I consider to be effective therapy have changed my type? And How does one learn their wing?

                I'm a 4w5 sp.

I can relate to what you're saying a bit. In the past, I have tended towards 7 romantic partners. It's actually a common pairing. The 4's are drawn to what they perceive to be the 7's joy in life; the 7's are drawn to what they perceive to be the 4's emotional depth. Each type struggling to find what it feels it doesn't have. Of course, since they're all responding to the outward persona of the type and not any true connection to these quailities, they are ultimately disappointed.

I joined Tribe two weeks ago, but only today am I getting up the nerve to post. I'm very, very shy.

I'm also a Sexual 4w5, Myers-Briggs INFJ, and Oldham Sensitive. (And for those of you who have read Elaine Aron's book, I'm also a Highly Sensitive Person.) Here's a website that I have found useful in showing the correspondences among various personality typologies: www.geocities.com/HotSpring...dence.html

For more information on the subtypes, check out www.9types.com/type4board...10045.html. I particularly like the description of the Sexual Four found there:

"SX 4s are the most emotional and romantic Fours who exemplify the Four's passionate approach to life. They live
completely by the heart, following every feeling, which can sometimes get them in trouble if they are not careful.
Intense fantasies of sunset kisses, and making love in a forest, swirl around in this variant's head, as they are the
most erotic of Fours. Their emotions are like roller coasters - from the dizzying highs of love, to the sour lows of
melancholy. One advantage of being so in tune with their feelings, is that they are also the potentially most
creative. The stereotypical artist with turbulent emotions and original art is a SX 4. Issues involving their identity
are not as prevalent as they are in SP and SCs, but instead take a back seat to their dominant emotional world of
    love, hatred, happiness and melancholy."

wow, i've always thought naranjo's book was the definitive way to type oneself. a hard read, in that you have to look with brutal honesty at what you look like when dis-integrating, but also the clearest elucidation of the patterns that i've come across so far.

for instance, i know i'ma four according to naranjo's descriptions, but the tests tend to put me at 7 cuz i have a lot of 7 going. but the basic imprint is 4, which claudio made clear.

could you name that book? i don't have it myself, but highly recommend it.

I'm also a 4w5 and am not tortured by it. Sure, those thoughts are present sometimes but they don't run the show. "4w5" describes my ego structure, not my true nature. Ultimately, we are more than our enneatype.

5w4 . one of the few in this tribe it seems.
i wouldn't assume that a 5 wouldn't find the enneagram intellectually appealing----talking about it however is a process depending on who and what context. usually its a waste of time because either the person in question mentally aligns the enneagram with astrology/numerology or the intellectual superiority of the 5 in general, and concerning the enneagram in particular makes conversation/discussion(boards) incredibly frustrating.

testing-----the only valid test is in the wisdom of the enneagram, either way testing tends to fail when most people attempt to do it for themselves as they dont have that presence telling them to stop lying to themselves about who they are.

Thank God someone mentioned Claudio's books. 'Character and Neurosis' is indeed a hard read. (Claudio never dumbs it down or has writing a best seller in mind.) But then I like 'Ennea-type Structures : Self-Analysis for the Seeker.' Though not the Source of this system, it is closer than most of the written stuff out there.

Typing one's own personality is just a tough business. In 1972 I was typed as a 7 and "lived an OK life like a good 7 should" for many years until Claudio re-typed me a 9 about 12 years ago.

I remember my conversation with a really good friend who is a great human, loving, caring, looking after the good of everyone, a classic even keeled 9! He also knows the enneagram quite well as a theory. I asked his type and he said that his wife, also an astute observer, says he is a redeemed 8. I expressed my astonishment, and S just said, "I'm no ass kisser." Bingo. I guess that it takes a rebellious 9 to see one.

    A tough business indeed.
