I culled this from "The Enneagram" by JG Bennet:
If you were to divide the number 1 (symbolic of The Unity) by each of the ordinal numbers 1 through 9, you'd find that only four of them are infinitely repeating decimals:
1 divided by 3 = .3333...etc.
1 divided by 6 = .16666...etc.
1 divided by 9 = .11111...etc
1 divided by 7 = .142857142857142857...etc.
(The other numbers are finite like 1 divided by 8 = .125)
The authors of the Enneagram thought the infinity factor of these particular numbers to be 'interesting'. So they plotted out a circle with 9 points. They first connected points 3, 6, and 9. (Creating the triangle.) Then they connected points 1, 4, 2, 8, 5, 7 (from 1 divided by 7, also representing the leftover numbers after 3, 6 and 9 are accounted for) and got the dynamic inner lines.
If you go ahead and plot out the numbers 1 - 9 on an Enneagram with 9 at the topmost point, you'll see clearly how they did it.
Smart fellas, that bunch were, eh?
